GOP Rep Collins Calls For Investigation Into CNN Over Botched Russian Spy Story: “I really question whose side CNN is on”

CNN is reeling from their botched Russian spy story but they have nowhere to hide and no one to blame.

The story was the CIA had to remove a top Russian asset out of fears Trump would blow his cover.

Sensational if true but just one problem, The New York Times came out with a report that said the actual reason was the CIA feared the media would find out the source and leak the name.

CNN added to their story the always fatal, “one of the reasons” not “the reason” as they had previously reported as the New York Times story raised eyebrows about CNN’s reporting.

Enter Doug Collins. From Fox News:

Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., said Tuesday that CNN’s report that the CIA pulled a high-level spy out of Russia due to President Trump’s “mishandling” of classified intelligence warrants an “investigation.”

“This is a problem that we’re seeing,” the ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee told “America’s Newsroom” on Tuesday.

“I think that it needs to be investigated, but with the CIA coming out like it has, then that’s something we need to look at.”

“I really question whose side CNN is on,” Collins said. “To put this out at this time and to put it in such a way that the CIA had to come out and respond to this is, really, a disturbing part.”

From The Daily Caller:

CNN’s Jim Sciutto reported that the CIA extracted the asset due in part to concerns about President Donald Trump’s handling of classified information. Sciutto, who served in the Obama administration, reported that the Russian source was removed soon after Trump met with Russian government officials in the Oval Office in May 2017. U.S. officials became concerned after that meeting that Trump and some in his administration might somehow reveal details about intelligence operations.

But according to The Times, the CIA offered to extract the asset in 2016, well before Trump took office.

The mole rejected the initial offer for exfiltration, but ultimately agreed to leave Russia in 2017, after the CIA raised concerns about increased media scrutiny of the sources the U.S. intelligence community used to determine that Russia meddled in the 2016 election.

“But former intelligence officials said there was no public evidence that Mr. Trump directly endangered the source, and other current American officials insisted that media scrutiny of the agency’s sources alone was the impetus for the extraction,” The Times story reads.

“The news reporting in the spring and summer of 2017 convinced United States government officials that they had to update and revive their extraction plan, according to people familiar the matter.”
